Have you ever wondered what the difference between a wedding, micro wedding, and an elopement is? So have I. You might have never heard of the term “micro wedding” before now.
A wedding is what you imagine, with lots of guests and friends and family. Generally speaking, an elopement is when it is just you and your spouse and an officiant, and sometimes only a handful of guests–definitely less than 20. Elopements used to only happen in courthouses, but it has become common (and very fun!) to do them in beautiful destinations, like Zions National Park for example. Micro weddings became very popular in 2020 when Covid-19 first hit because of the limit on group sizes, and the desire for more health safety and social distancing. Micro weddings are sometimes called elopements, but they aren’t the same thing. They are small and happen in some of the same destination locations as popular elopements, but the guest list is not as limited–think less than 50.
Now that we’ve narrowed down the definitions, let me tell you a bit about this amazing micro wedding I had the pleasure of capturing at a private residence in Scottsdale, Arizona!

This wedding took place in the courtyard of a beautiful Spanish hacienda. There were some amazing vendors who transformed the place and made it magical! Let’s look at some of the details first!
One of my favorite things about this wedding were all of the beautiful flower arrangements. Quick tip: if you want to make your wedding look high end, flowers are the best way to do it! So many flowers at the head table, the flower arch at the front of the aisle, obviously the bouquet, and even on the fountain. *chef’s kiss*
The ceremony space was so perfect. I loved the flower arch, their first kiss, and their excitement as they walked back down the aisle! How cute are they…
After the ceremony came the couple’s time to shine. We took a little bit and walked around the courtyard to do some formal photos. We were able to get so creative with the architecture and the landscaping of the yard and it was so much fun! Here are some of my favorites. Don’t they just look so in love?
Then, it was time for speeches and for dinner. Queue the champagne! It was so beautiful, happy, and fun and I can’t get over it. Take me back!
Now you know what a micro wedding is. It is a small celebration with your closest friends and family. One of the best things about this particular micro wedding was how the hacienda was able to sleep everyone. What a perfect place to have a wedding, amiright??
Do you think you would have something like this for your wedding? If you do, I would absolutely love to be your photographer! Send me a message and we can chat!
